Abstract

As a representative work of Dunhuang frescoes in the late Tang Dynasty, the “Zhang Yichao ’s Procession”in Cave 156 of Mogao Grottoes reproduces the grandeur of Zhang Yichao ’s military travel in the Hexi Festival of the Tang Dynasty with a grand narrative scene. This paper tries to focus on the sacred heroic narrative place of Cave 156 of Mogao Grottoes. Through the mutual evidence of historical books, inscriptions and images about Zhang Yichao ’s deeds, this paper reveals the heroic narrative essence of Zhang Yichao, expounds the collective memory of political intention expression, emotional identity communication and national cultural rejuvenation, and excavates the unique value of the image in the international communication of Dunhuang culture by virtue of the cross-cultural advantages of heroic narrative, the cross-cultural support of historical mutual evidence and the cross-cultural translation of visual symbols.
